Statements in the House

Committees Of The House March 11th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 11th report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans which recommends that it be granted leave to travel the week of March 22, 1999 to Nain and Cartwright, Labrador to hold town hall meetings in connection with fisheries issues.

Parks March 10th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, in Newfoundland near Bonavista Bay and Notre Dame Bay they are considering the establishment of a marine conversation area.

As it is under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State for Parks, I would ask him to respond to their concerns about the establishment of this area.

Parks March 10th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, in Newfoundland near Bonavista and Notre Dame Bay there are concerns about a national marine conservation area.

Would the Secretary of State for Parks please inform the people of Newfoundland in the House of his response to their concerns?

The Late William Petten March 9th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, it is a privilege today to rise and to remember the life of William Petten.

Bill Petten was a man who combined the best of Newfoundland with the best of Canada. With wit and wisdom he served in the Canadian Senate from 1968 to 1998. Bill's infectious sense of humour won him friends on all sides of both houses of parliament.

Senator Petten was instrumental in extending Canada's marine jurisdiction beyond 200 miles to the great advantage of his home province of Newfoundland and to all Canadians. Bill Petten was a friend and confidant of premiers, prime ministers and everyday Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

To his wife Bernice and his children, Sharon, William, Rob and Raylene, I offer our heartfelt condolences. Like you, we will always remember Bill in our hearts as a great member from Newfoundland.

Employment March 8th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, older workers often have difficulty finding employment.

In New Brunswick we have the so-called New Brunswick job corps, where nearly a thousand men and women participate in a program for those over 50. It is funded by our federal and provincial governments.

I would ask the Minister of Human Resources Development to explain the anxiety that we have in New Brunswick over the fact that the program may soon end.

Committees Of The House March 5th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 10th report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans pertaining to the order in council appointment of the Commissioner of Agriculture.

I would say, with the exception of one committee member, that all members of the committee were most impressed with the appointment of Mr. Yves Bastien.

East Coast Music Awards February 16th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners from Sunday night's 11th edition of the East Coast Music Awards.

The gala awards show held in St. John's, Newfoundland honoured all artists from Atlantic Canada in 19 different musical categories, including jazz, country, pop rock, music in both English and French.

Bruce Guthro brought home five awards, making him Sunday night's biggest winner.

An event like the East Coast Music Awards is very significant in that it gives artists in the music industry an opportunity to showcase their talent and to be rewarded for their efforts. The music industry on the east coast is vibrant and in constant expansion.

Atlantic Canada region's music can be heard from coast to coast and abroad and adds riches to the wide range of Canadian talent. I would like my colleagues in the House to congratulate all those artists, the winners and the nominees who took part in this great music event.

Committees Of The House February 16th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the ninth report of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.

Pursuant to the order of reference on Tuesday, May 5, 1998, our committee has considered Bill C-27, an act to amend the Coastal Fisheries Protection Act and the Canada Shipping Act. Our committee has agreed to report it with amendment.

Government Of New Brunswick December 9th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am really excited today with the events that are happening in New Brunswick: Premier Thériault, his throne speech and the first budget.

We see additional moneys for education and for health. Above all, we see that he is to end voice mail as a system of answering government phones in New Brunswick. Away with the press 1, press 2, go to 3 and listen to the bells and whistles.

This is a dandy initiative and we hope that other government agencies will also look forward to real people answering their phones.

Agriculture November 26th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to see all parties in the House recognize the farm crisis, the droughts we had in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, the low prices of grains, the tremendous problem in the hog industry, the need for our provinces and the federal government to co-operate. Can the minister of agriculture relate to the House how he plans to co-operate with our provincial governments to alleviate this farm crisis?
