Statements in the House

Ukraine November 2nd, 2004

Mr. Speaker, we are of course quite encouraged that the voting was carried out in a peaceful manner.

That being said, the Ukrainian authorities should ensure that the serious problems encountered in the first round of vote counting should be resolved by the time the second round is being held.

We also call on all parties to continue to campaign peacefully and to reject any calls for violence. The campaigning and the voting in the second round must be free of intimidation or harassment.

Terrorism November 1st, 2004

Mr. Speaker, we will continue to pay very close attention to all the groups. We will continue to be absolutely clear that the government will want to promote the peace process. We will continue to do that.

We will continue to fight terrorism as we have been doing for a number of years by adding $7 billion and $8 billion to our capacity to fight terrorism. This is the determination of our government.

Foreign Affairs November 1st, 2004

I am sorry, Mr. Speaker, but the opposition seems only interested in scoring cheap political points, whereas we are talking about a very sensitive region where the Government of Canada and this country for 50 years has been trying to make a difference.

We will continue to make a difference because we care about the security of Israelis, of Palestinians and of other people who live in that region.

Foreign Affairs November 1st, 2004

Would hon. members please listen for a second on such an important subject like the Middle East peace talks--

Foreign Affairs November 1st, 2004

Mr. Speaker, I wish the opposition, on a subject of such importance at this time in the Middle East, would focus on Canadian policy, which Ambassador Charbonneau, like every ambassador of Canada, will support.

Our Canadian policy--

National Defence November 1st, 2004

Mr. Speaker, this government has demonstrated quite clearly our absolute support for multilateralism.

It is quite possible to walk and chew gum at the same time. We have been in Norad for decades. We have been in Norad with the United States of America because we are talking about the security of the North American continent.

I do not know where the leader of the NDP is going with this. We support multilateralism, absolutely. We are determined to look at the security of this continent as all Canadians should.

Foreign Affairs October 29th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, I am sorry that a brand new member of this House is already playing this complex victimization game that is so typical of his political party.

I can assure the House that we were very pleased to facilitate things for Premier Charest's request to meet with the President of Mexico. Everything was done in a totally regular fashion. We are waiting for the reply of the Mexican presidency and we will transmit that reply to Mr. Charest as soon as we receive it.

Foreign Affairs October 27th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to see the hon. member praise the excellent work done by Lester B. Pearson. I can assure the House that the position he put forward has been supported by every government that has led our country since. It was the position of our government in the difficult Middle East situation and it continues to be the position of our government. Our position has not changed. We want the Israelis, the Palestinians and others in that region to be safe.

Foreign Affairs October 27th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, the decision made by Israel to pull out of the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank can only be good news. We are of course very pleased with it. Indeed, yesterday's vote is a positive measure.

We will continue to support the peace process. Canada has long supported the creation of two states that would live peacefully side by side.

Terrorism October 26th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, this government and our country, Canada, have embarked on the fight against terrorism very closely. The Deputy Prime Minister is doing an outstanding job of making sure that we are squarely on side to fight terrorism in Canada and internationally, and we shall continue to do so. We are in the fight against terrorism.
