Statements in the House

Citizenship and Immigration November 19th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, it would be nice to know when he got the file because yesterday he said that he did not have it.

The immigration minister's conduct during the election was clearly unethical. She has misled the House over the days telling us a different story. Will she step aside while the ethics commissioner reviews this file?

Citizenship and Immigration November 19th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, the minister and the Prime Minister for days have told the House that the ethics commissioner was investigating this matter. Let me quote Micheline Rondeau-Parent from the ethics commissioner's office. She said:

--the Ethics Commissioner doesn't know what he is supposed to be investigating yet because he hasn't received any information from [the minister's department]....So he will have to look at whatever she presents to him, OK. At this stage she hasn't done that...I'm not even sure it is an investigation per se, but he will provide advice [when we receive information].

Why would the ethics commissioner's office tell us that yesterday, if the minister said that he already was investigating over the last three days? He is not investigating--

Citizenship and Immigration November 19th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, the immigration minister's conduct during the election was clearly unethical. The minister claims she has referred the mess to the ethics commissioner.

The ethics commissioner's office has stated that it does not know what to investigate because it has not received any information. Why is the minister adding to her woes by misleading the House?

Business of the House November 18th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, knowing how Hamiltonians feel about the Toronto Argonauts, I am sure the government House leader wants to wish the British Columbia Lions well on Sunday.

At the same time, he may want to tell us what is happening tomorrow and what the business is for the following week.

Points of Order November 17th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, during question period, while the member for Calgary—Nose Hill was asking a question, the President of the Treasury Board was yelling some perhaps unparliamentary comments across the aisle, but at the same time, he called her “sweetheart”.

I know her husband thinks she is a sweetheart, but I do not think she wants people to know that the President of the Treasury Board is her sweetheart. I would ask him to apologize for making that statement to the hon. member during question period.

Grey Cup November 17th, 2004

Mr. Speaker:

We are Lions, hear us roar, from our rugged western shore.Vancouver will take Hogtownand we will turn it upside down. Our team will take the Argos by the heels and shake the pennies from their pants. The roars across the west will smother eastern rants. And when all is said and done in gloomy old Bytown,we'll shake your hands and go back homeand leave you with your frowns.

B.C. Lions forever, Mr. Speaker, British Columbia is number one. The West is here to stay--at least long enough to get our hands on the Grey Cup so we can take it home. Go, Lions, go.

Right Hon. Ellen Fairclough November 16th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I encourage all members to take a look at the Grey Cup. After next Sunday they can visit it in British Columbia.

Citizenship Act November 15th, 2004

moved for leave to introduce Bill S-2, an act to amend the Citizenship Act.

(Motion agreed to and bill read the first time)

Income Tax Act November 15th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, there have been consultations and I think if you would seek it you would find unanimous consent for the following motion. I move:

That the bill entitled an act to amend the Income Tax Act (exclusion of income received by an athlete from a non-profit club, society or association), listed on the notice paper in the name of the member for Cypress Hills—Grasslands, be deemed introduced by the member for Cypress Hills—Grasslands and seconded by the member for Prince Albert.

Business of the House November 4th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the government talked out debate on the first report of the health committee calling on the government to compensate victims of hepatitis C. As a result, there is a now a government order listed on the order paper as Government Business No. 4. I would like to ask the government House leader if he would consider calling that business tomorrow so that we can adopt this very important and urgent motion for Canadians suffering from hepatitis C.

I would then also like to ask what we can expect from the government for tomorrow and the week following the break we are taking to honour all of those who served Canada.
