Statements in the House

Pay Equity May 1st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, if there is one group which is demanding negotiation of the pay equity issue, it is the group dealing with pay equity matters within the government.

We have tried for months and months to reach a negotiated conclusion. In fact, at the present time it is the unions which are stopping their membership from voting on a more than generous offer from the federal government.

Pay Equity May 1st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the matter of pay equity is clearly one in which the government has made the right proposals. The government made a proposal which now, in light of the most recent court decisions, is seen as having been very generous.

On numerous occasions we have asked the unions to pass the offer on to their membership because we are convinced that the majority of their members would vote in favour of the government offer.

I beg my hon. colleague to try to change the inflexibility of the union leadership and to ask them to submit our offer to their members.

Treasury Board April 30th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the RCMP has just finished its investigation. It was asked by the government to do an investigation. It was given all the facts. It has looked at it at length. It has accused one person and that person has now accepted that he is guilty.

The RCMP has made its investigation with all the facts. There has been an accusation, it has gone to the judge and a judgment has been rendered. There is nothing more to do.

Treasury Board April 30th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, again, it was a minister of this government who asked the RCMP to conduct an investigation.

The investigation took place. All the facts were provided to the RCMP. After its investigation was completed, the RCMP laid charges against one person. That person has now admitted his guilt and the judge has handed down his ruling.

Treasury Board April 30th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, once again, all these issues were discussed last fall. A full RCMP investigation was held at our request. It was completed and led to only one charge. The RCMP has all the facts, and now a judgment has been rendered.

Treasury Board April 30th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was informed of certain actions by a minister of this government as soon as the accusations were made. An investigation was made of all the facts, including those referred to by my colleague.

The RCMP laid only one charge. The decision has been handed down now in the case of the individual charged.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police April 29th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the RCMP was alerted by a government minister who called for an investigation.

A complete investigation was carried out, including the allegation referred to by my colleague in the House. The investigation is now complete, the charge has been laid, and the judge has rendered his decision. The case is closed.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police April 29th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the RCMP has completed a full investigation of this matter. Today, the only person charged by the RCMP has made a court appearance and the case is closed.

Seniors Benefit April 24th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the seniors benefit being implemented by the government gives special consideration to the situation of women in particular.

Indeed, the proposed reforms will ensure the sustainability of the seniors benefit program and will allow it to become even more generous for those who will need it in the years to come, particularly women. Our proposed amendments will help those who have the greatest need for that benefit, and will make the system—

Taxation April 24th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, if there is one government in the last 50 years that should be congratulated for its results and in particular for reducing the deficit in the country, it is ours.

As announced in the last budget, the government has indicated it would reduce taxes for 14 million Canadians. This is what was done in the last budget. More than 400,000 Canadians have been taken off the tax rolls completely. This is what this government has done for Canadian taxpayers.

The government has also indicated in the budget that over the next few years it would continue to reduce taxes.
