Statements in the House

Foreign Affairs April 3rd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, today Canada took up its duties as president of the UN security council.

Gasoline Pricing March 31st, 2000

Mr. Speaker, everyone knows that the Quebec federal Liberal MPs are first and foremost all on the payroll of English Canada.

In June of 1998, five Quebec Liberal MPs toured across Canada in connection with the oil industry. Amazingly, they did not include Quebec in their travels.

No way could Quebecers count on the hon. members for Beauce, Laval West, Lac-Saint-Louis, Brossard—La Prairie, or Bourassa to defend their interests.

In the battle for lower gasoline prices, none but the Bloc Quebecois members have been battling for weeks to obtain concessions from the Liberal government, in order to help out consumers, truckers and the least advantaged members of our society.

In the next federal election, Quebec will respond clearly to the arrogance of the Liberals, by voting overwhelmingly in favour of the Bloc Quebecois.

Iraq March 23rd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, a Canadian mission just back from Iraq has told us that the international embargo and sanctions against this country are a source of unnecessary suffering for the population and are allowing the Iraqi regime to profit from a black market that has very quickly sprung up.

My question is for the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Given these facts, and given that Canada is slow to take a clear stand on this issue, when is the government going to show some leadership so that the security council will reconsider this embargo, which is not attaining its objectives?

Petitions March 20th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I would like to table a petition pertaining to the Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline practised in China which, according to its followers, leads to improved physical and mental health.

The petitioners are calling upon the Parliament of Canada to continue urging the Chinese government to release all arrested Falun Dafa practitioners in China immediately, to lift the ban on this spiritual discipline, to withdraw the international arrest warrant for Mr. Li Hongzhi, who founded the movement, and to achieve a peaceful resolution through open dialogue.
