Statements in the House

Construction Of A French-Language School June 2nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to repeat what the Prime Minister and myself have already said. It is our wish and our will to see that school move to new facilities in Kingston.

We have indeed allocated funds in this regard, which reflects our will to see the issue solved. The primary responsibility lies with the provincial department, municipal officials and concerned school board.

We have already contacted provincial authorities to express our concern. Right now, school board members are negotiating with Kingston officials to speed up the process. I think we must trust those who are primarily concerned, namely the school board officials, and give them a chance to solve the issue with our general support.

Kingston's Francophones June 1st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, this decision reflects the Canadian government's determination to support Kingston's francophones. There will be a school.

Development Of Canada's Francophonie May 26th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, clearly, we have not spoken to the same persons. The Leader of the Opposition is getting his information from malcontents, while I have talked to people with whom I am negotiating. My objective is to ensure the survival and growth of these communities across Canada, not to make political hay for reasons known to us all.

Development Of Canada's Francophonie May 26th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition does not seem to have paid close attention to our actions in recent months. We have increased grants to La Francophonie in different parts of Canada. School governance has been spared budget cuts. We have negotiated and are continuing to negotiate a whole series of agreements with minority groups and provincial governments. If the Leader of the Opposition would like a list of our achievements, I would be delighted to provide him with one.

Development Of Canada's Francophonie May 26th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to report that such a policy is on the drawing board. A great deal has already been accomplished and we will continue to meet our legal obligations in the area of official languages.

Canadian Film Development Corporation Act May 26th, 1994

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-31, an act to amend the Canadian Film Development Corporation.

(Motion deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed.)

Amateur Sport May 24th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, we should not be mixing apples and oranges. A museum and athletes are two very different things. I can, however, reassure our colleague that I have always given priority consideration to hard-working athletes in whom we take great pride. She can rest assured that they will have the consideration of the minister of heritage.

Amateur Sport May 24th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I am delighted that our colleague has given me this opportunity to shed some light on this situation. Last week, I received a copy of the report that had been tabled. The only ministerial decision that was taken was to make the report public. Any further decisions will not be made until the report is examined.

I might add that not only will recommendations be examined, but also the very concept on which the report is based, that is the concept of mainstream sport. We will examine all of this and make our decisions known in due course.

Canadian Museum Of Nature May 5th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the doubts raised by the hon. member regarding the management of this museum and its inquiry are precisely the reason why I will be relying on the job being done by the Auditor General's Office.

Canadian Museum Of Nature May 5th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, this is an internal report commissioned by the management of the museum which has an arms-length relationship with the government. This does not mean that I do not care about what goes on there, and I will see how we could provide more information to our colleagues opposite.
