Committees of the House March 22nd, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the 10th report of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, entitled “Main Estimates 2023-24: Votes 1 and 5 under Department of Veterans Affairs and Vote 1 under Veterans Review and Appeal Board”.

International Women's Day March 9th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, for the sixth consecutive year, I am celebrating International Women's Day in the riding of Bourassa by honouring eight women for the commendable things they do every single day.

This Sunday I will have the honour of awarding the Bourassa MP's medal to Gail Bernstein, Cassandra Exumé, Sheila Fortuné, Guida Petruccelli, Denise Landry, Kawthar Ouarrak, Diane Tardy and Marie-Clothilde Théard. They are dedicated women who, each in their own sphere of activity, fight to end violence against women and the social isolation of seniors, or fight to promote equal opportunities, inclusion and academic success.

Family and friends are invited to the ceremony, which will take place in Montreal North, in the riding of Bourassa.

I call on my colleagues to join me in congratulating these eight exceptional women.

Justice February 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, since the murder of George Floyd, our government has announced several measures to combat systemic racism.

We know that Black people are overrepresented in prisons. Yesterday, the Minister of Justice announced the establishment of the steering group for Canada's Black justice strategy. Can he tell us more?

Diversity and Inclusion February 9th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, as we commemorate the impactful contributions and accomplishments of Blacks in Canada this Black History Month, it is important to recognize the challenges faced by Black communities across the country.

Last October, the Minister of Diversity introduced the $200-million, Black-led philanthropic endowment fund aimed at improving the social and economic well-being of Blacks in Canada.

May the minister provide an update on this substantial initiative, please?

Committees of the House December 14th, 2022

Madam Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the ninth report of the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, entitled “Survival Retirement Pension Benefits (Marriage After 60)”.

Pursuant to Standing Order 109, the committee requests that the government table a comprehensive response to this report.

Foreign Affairs December 8th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, Haiti remains a major concern. Canada has clearly expressed its support for Haiti and its intention to help Haitians in their quest for peace and democracy.

The Haitian crisis will require Haitian solutions. It also requires the support of the international community and regional partners. What measures have been taken under the leadership of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ensure that other countries follow Canada's example and that our partners commit to supporting the Haitian solution?

Elections at Jean-Nicolet Elementary School December 7th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, today I enthusiastically welcome a delegation of students and teachers from Jean-Nicolet elementary school, a school in my riding of Bourassa. They are visiting Ottawa today. Every year, teacher Kerline François organizes an election campaign with her students to teach them how our democratic system works.

This year, I swore in prime minister Youssef Jaafari, deputy prime minister Alexis Garcia-Briones, justice minister Jamesley Cacéus, minister of sport and recreation Francesca Joyce Ketcha, minister of the environment and social solidarity Ennymabel Arvelo Joaquim, minister of arts and communication Lina Dib, and minister responsible for the public service and the auditor general Mirbel Saintilnor.

I wish them all an excellent term as sixth-grade council of ministers. We are assured a succession. I would like to congratulate their teacher and thank her for accepting my invitation.

Committees of the House December 5th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the eighth report of the Standing Committee on Veterans entitled “Supplementary Estimates (B), 2022-23: Votes 1b and 5b under Department of Veterans Affairs”.

Foreign Affairs October 20th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, Haiti has asked for international assistance to combat the current crisis. Since then, politicians and the corrupt financial elite have only ramped up their scheming, and gangs continue to terrorize the people of Haiti.

Can the Minister of Foreign Affairs tell us how Canada intends to respond to this plea for help?

Situation in Haiti October 17th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, while governments are grappling with many challenges such as war and inflation, I want to make the House of Commons aware of yet another crisis facing the people of Haiti.

Haiti is in the midst of a multidimensional crisis, specifically a political crisis in which the lack of credible authority and democratic institutions has given rise to heavily armed gangs that have been raping women and terrorizing the Haitian people, even before former president Jovenel Moïse was assassinated; a humanitarian crisis fraught with even more misery and the resurgence of cholera; and an economic crisis spurred by oligarchs who continue to squander Haiti's resources. Corruption in Haiti is unprecedented.

The diaspora is very concerned about the situation. As an MP of Haitian origin, I urge all members of the House to show their support for the people of Haiti.
