Search and Rescue December 4th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the top priority of the Canadian Coast Guard is and always will be the safety of our mariners.

We do have a contract with a Canadian company that is taking medical calls.

Mr. Speaker, we are modernizing our library services. We are taking advantage of the increasing availability of information resources in digital form. Even today, most requests received are delivered electronically. That is why we are changing. We are saving taxpayers millions of dollars because more people are moving to the electronic mode of asking for these materials.

Fisheries and Oceans November 29th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, we are working to modernize our library service with a model that will emphasize the use of digital collections, supplemented by the existing packing and shipping of copyrighted materials that cannot be digitized. Library services will continue to be provided in both French and English. We are moving DFO into the 21st century and saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

Fisheries and Oceans November 29th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the department has made a decision to modernize its library services and to take advantage of increasing availability of information resources in digital form. Even today, most requests are received and delivered electronically.

Work is underway and will be completed by the fall of 2013. Services will be available in both French and English.

Fisheries and Oceans November 27th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, our government is eliminating waste and duplication in government.

Library users are asking for digital information, so it is only logical that Fisheries and Oceans would accommodate that demand by making its collection available in digital format.

The library will continue to deliver services in both English and French.

Mr. Speaker, I can assure the hon. member I have not ignored lobster fishers or the industry. I have met with many of them over the past month. Many organizations, including those industry organizations, have shown interest in the opportunity to provide this service to the fishers. This is something they can do. The proposals will be considered, and the tags program will be in place.

Fisheries and Oceans November 27th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, let me be clear, gear identification tools such as trap tags are still required in fisheries where industry has deemed they are necessary. That includes the lobster fishery. DFO has sent information letters to all affected fish harvesters and has posted information online in relation to the new method for tag supplies. We will continue to improve programs for fish harvesters, and we are committed to protecting our Canadian fisheries.

Search and Rescue November 22nd, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I can assure the hon. member that we are maintaining our bilingual capacity through the consolidation of the MRSC in Quebec, and we are ensuring that the Coast Guard does have the resources it needs to do the good job that it does every day, which is to save the lives of people.

Search and Rescue November 22nd, 2012

Mr. Speaker, we are confident that the changes in Quebec City will have no negative impact on our ability to respond to distress incidents on the water quickly, effectively and in both official languages.

Quebec is served by 19 Coast Guard vessels, including seven search and rescue lifeboats, two hovercraft and six helicopters. We are ensuring that the Coast Guard has the resources to do the job and save lives.

Canada Revenue Agency November 22nd, 2012

Mr. Speaker, we do not keep medical records. We are the department of national revenue. I want to make sure that is clear.

Our top priority, of course, is the economy, which includes making sure that Canadian tax dollars are spent wisely. This change will ensure the privacy and security of taxpayers' records and will do so at a lower cost. We must ensure that taxpayers' money is spent where it will do the most good. In any event, more and more Canadians are moving to electronic services.
