Statements in the House

Court Challenges Program June 16th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, our government is very proud of the agreement concluded with the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada. When the terms and conditions of the agreement can be announced, we will be pleased to do so.

That being said, the two parties have agreed to keep the terms and conditions confidential.

Film Festivals in Quebec June 16th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, once again, we are talking about 17 years of unfulfilled projects for the Bloc. This is the Bloc's anniversary, and empty hands is all that it has to show for it.

Last week, I was in Quebec City to inaugurate the airport. The Conservatives members of the Quebec City region had made a commitment in that regard, and they made good on their promise.

Film Festivals in Quebec June 16th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, after being here in Ottawa for 17 years, what has the Bloc been able to bring to the Quebec film industry? What has the Bloc been able to bring to Quebec's festivals? Nothing.

Our government is committed to film festivals and to our film industry, and will continue to be.

Court Challenges Program June 16th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, the government has agreed to keep the terms and conditions of the agreement confidential. When it is possible, we will disclose the content.

Court Challenges Program June 16th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, an agreement has in fact between reached by the two parties, to their satisfaction. We have agreed to keep the terms and conditions of the agreement confidential. When it is possible, we will make them public.

Bill 101 June 9th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, as the hon. member just explained, Bill C-482 did not receive the government's support. That being said, our government will work within its jurisdiction and protect both official languages in Canada.

Furthermore, as a Quebecker, I refuse to accept the Bloc member's flag-waving tactics, presenting himself as the only one defending the rights of francophones in Quebec.

Canadian Heritage June 5th, 2008

Mr. Speaker, this gives me an opportunity to talk about the immense popularity of the new program announced by the government to provide festivals with $30 million over two years. We received a record number of applications. The department's employees are working very hard to get the funding to the festivals that applied. This will be done in the coming days.

Quebec City Armoury June 3rd, 2008

Mr. Speaker, once again, I will repeat what I have already said many times. Experts are assessing the structure of the armoury. Whether the Bloc Québécois member likes it or not, we will not glean any real information about the stability of the armoury's facade from the leader of the Bloc or his visits to the armoury.

Business of Supply May 29th, 2008

Mr. Chair, Canada is very involved in la Francophonie, both internationally and within Canada, as I indicated in my speech a few hours ago.

As the hon. member knows, Canada will be chairing the next Sommet de la Francophonie. One of the chosen themes, in fact, is language. Canada took on a leadership role on language issues at the convention on cultural diversity.

In terms of Canadian Francophonie and also in the context of Quebec City's upcoming 400th anniversary celebrations, Canada gave $1.1 million to the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française for the “francoforce project”, which will tour the country, stopping in 14 cities from May 30 until September.

These are all measures intended to promote the French language in Canada.

Business of Supply May 29th, 2008

Mr. Chair, I thank the member for his interest. As a minister from the Quebec City area, I am very much in favour of hosting all of these big international events in our region for many reasons.

The member was wondering if this was part of my portfolio, and the answer is no. I know that my colleague from Citizenship and Immigration is working very hard on this. She has had many opportunities to speak about this in the House. She has every intention of working diligently with the people from her department on this file.
