Statements in the House

Business of the House April 19th, 2013

moved:

That, at the conclusion of today's debate on the opposition motion in the name of the Member for Nanaimo-Cowichan, all questions necessary to dispose of the motion be deemed put and a recorded division deemed requested and deferred to Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the expiry of the time provided for Government Orders; and that the House then proceed to the consideration of Private Members' Business.

Government Services April 16th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives promised that their cuts to the public service would not affect the quality of services provided to the public. However, we know that this is not true.

By 2016, 29,000 jobs will be eliminated, not 19,000, as they announced. At Human Resources and Skills Development and Veterans Affairs Canada, 25% of the staff will be eliminated; at Statistics Canada, it will be one-third.

Will the Conservatives redo the math and admit that they have misled the House?

Mr. Speaker, I request that the division be deferred until tomorrow, at the end of the time provided for government orders.

Taxation March 26th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the honourable thing to do would be to withdraw the case.

The Conservatives are reaching into Canadians' pockets with both hands to deal with the enormous deficit they created. Going to visit a loved one in the hospital? There is a parking tax. Doing your grocery shopping? There is $300 million in taxes on imports. Belong to a credit union? There is a rebate tax.

Do the Conservatives realize that they are destroying our economy by taxing everything?

Employment Insurance March 26th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are taking a cancer survivor to court because she collected employment insurance benefits while she was ill. The government must have no heart or feelings if it is going after this courageous woman. The only decent thing to do is to abandon this ridiculous legal battle. Could the Conservatives look up the word “empathy” in the dictionary and apply it to this situation?
