Statements in the House

Justice March 22nd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, with all due respect, while we respect Canadians’ intelligence, this government clearly does not.

The SNC-Lavalin boss never said that jobs were at risk. However, the Prime Minister, his aide Gerald Butts and the Clerk of the Privy Council, who stepped down on Monday, I would remind the House, said on several occasions that was the case.

We now know that that part of the story was completely fabricated to try to justify their abuse of power towards the former attorney general and towards Canadians.

When will the Prime Minister stop the cover-up?

Justice March 22nd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, we can always count on the Leader of the Government for comic relief.

When the Business News Network asked the president and CEO of SNC-Lavalin if failure to obtain a remediation agreement could mean job losses, he replied that he never said that, never talked to the Prime Minister about it, and does not know what he made up or had in his mind.

When will the Prime Minister end the cover-up and allow the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics to investigate this scandal?

Interim Estimates March 21st, 2019

Madam Speaker, I just want to say that I was not here when the motion was being read out, so my vote should not count.

Justice March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, if anyone here is afraid of something, it is the Prime Minister himself. He is afraid to talk about political interference in our justice system. He is afraid to let the former attorney general speak.

What is he so afraid of? Four people have resigned so far. Things must be pretty bad.

Will the Prime Minister appear before the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, yes or no?

Justice March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, who said that questions remain unanswered? It was the former attorney general. Who said that she had lost confidence in how the government dealt with this matter? It was the former president of the Treasury Board.

The Prime Minister is insulting Canadians' intelligence by refusing to shed light on this affair.

Will the Prime Minister stop covering up the truth and agree to appear, and let his officials appear, before the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics so that we can get to the bottom of this political interference?

Justice March 19th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to hear her talk about the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. I was in committee over the past five weeks, and I can say that the Liberal members on the other side were controlled by the Prime Minister's Office. There was no way that we could get to the bottom of this matter.

The former attorney general was under a gag order. The other witnesses who testified were able to speak.

Why can we not get the truth about the period from January 14 to February 12?

Justice March 19th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, the former attorney general left cabinet because the Prime Minister's Office was pressuring her to circumvent the law. The former president of the Treasury Board stepped down because she had lost confidence, in her words. Gerald Butts left and we are not sure why, and the Clerk of the Privy Council is retiring. It is odd.

However, the Prime Minister says there was no corruption in the SNC-Lavalin affair. If that is true, then why so many resignations?

Why not allow the former attorney general to tell her whole truth? What is he afraid of?

Questions on the Order Paper March 18th, 2019

With regard to the briefing note titled “Subject of national security concern granted permanent residency” and the January 2019 media reports that an individual of national security concern was granted permanent residency status: (a) has the individual’s permanent residency status been revoked and, if so, on what date was it revoked; and (b) if the permanent residency status has not been revoked, why has it not been revoked?

Justice March 18th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, Canadians see what is going on. They know that the right to speak was cut off after January 14, but that the former attorney general should have the right to talk about what happened during a period of time between January 14 and February 12. There is a lot of information that is critical to this case.

Will the Prime Minister allow the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to have the former attorney general come back to testify?

Justice March 18th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, Canadians know that they have not heard the whole truth when it comes to the Prime Minister's scandal.

In a letter to her constituents, the former attorney general said that these matters were still unfolding and that further clarity and information were needed. She said that this matter was serious and some questions remain unanswered.

Will the Prime Minister authorize her to appear again before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights tomorrow?
