Statements in the House

Health March 10th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, the union representing border service officers is concerned about the fact that Health Canada does not have a presence in airports. The Public Health Agency of Canada says it is implementing every possible measure to reduce the impact of the crisis, but the union's president, Mr. Fortin, disputes that claim, saying nobody on the front lines is seeing that.

Canada is doing okay for now, but we know that the number of cases is sure to go up, just like in other parts of the world. Who is telling the truth, the Prime Minister or the experts at the border?

Public Safety March 10th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, people in my riding, Charlesbourg—Haute-Saint-Charles, have questions for the Prime Minister.

They want to know why he never shows any interest in security-related issues. Since 2017, they have watched him welcome thousands of illegal immigrants with open arms. His government welcomes them every day and does nothing to put a stop to the problem.

It is clear to the people I represent that the Liberal government does not understand the concept of borders. Right now, anyone can circumvent the immigration system, while those who apply in accordance with the law are forced to wait even longer.

In the past month, my constituents have watched this government let criminals block rail lines and derail the economy. Many Canadians lost their jobs, and Canadians' safety and security were at risk. My constituents want to know why.

They are also concerned about the government's failure to make a decision about banning Huawei from the 5G network. They know that the Communist Chinese regime spies on us and regularly steals Canadian intellectual property, but they do not see the government doing anything to protect them.

They feel abandoned, and they want to know why.

Public Safety March 9th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, Canada is the only Five Eyes ally that has not yet made a decision about Huawei's participation in our 5G network. In defence of the government's lack of action, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry stated, and I quote, that Canada “won’t get bullied by any other jurisdiction.”

However, this is not the time to be picking fights with our allies.

What is the Prime Minister waiting for to ban Huawei from our 5G network and to protect Canadian businesses and citizens?

Health February 27th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, Australia announced that it is implementing a contingency plan to address the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the decision today, as he expects a global pandemic to be declared within days. Even Canada's chief public health officer, Theresa Tam, told reporters Tuesday that the virus is likely to cause a pandemic.

There is no need to panic, but Canadians want reassurance.

Can the Prime Minister confirm today that there is a contingency plan ready to be activated?

Public Safety February 26th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, what happened was a terrible tragedy. That is why the family wants answers and everyone wants answers. Yesterday, Canada's correctional investigator clearly said that the internal investigation requested by the government was problematic and that there must be an external investigation.

Will the Prime Minister ask the Parole Board of Canada and the Correctional Service of Canada for an external investigation?

The Economy February 25th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, contrary to what the Minister of Transport said, the Prime Minister is not doing anything to resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, Resolute Forest Products is planning to halt production at some 20 sawmills in Quebec and Ontario. Two Resolute sawmills are located in Haute-Mauricie. Up to 5,000 workers could be affected.

The Prime Minister wants to lecture other countries, but when there is a crisis here at home, he does nothing.

Is there anyone across the way who can step up and do his job?

The Economy February 25th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, for 20 days, there have been blockades across Canada, and things are only getting worse. Freight trains are blocked and paralyzed. Tensions are rising.

Pierre Dolbec, the president of Corporation des parcs industriels du Québec, said in an interview that this situation is totally ridiculous and that if it goes on, more vulnerable companies may not make it through the crisis.

The prime minister's lack of leadership is seriously harming companies in every region of Quebec, and there is no end in sight.

When will he take action?

Public Safety February 24th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, the RCMP commissioner was present at the emergency meeting with the Prime Minister last Monday.

Canadians waited patiently for the Prime Minister to take concrete action to end a crisis that could have been easily avoided. For over two weeks, police refused to do anything about the blockades. It was clear that they had been instructed not to intervene.

Why did the Prime Minister order police not to step in before?

Public Safety February 24th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, the governments of Ontario and Quebec have started clearing the blockades in their provinces. They have asked the Prime Minister for coordinated action, but, as usual, his lack of leadership is hampering their efforts.

There is no doubt that the Canadian economy is suffering as a result, but the safety of Canadians is also at stake. The Prime Minister refuses to act, and his hollow pronouncements only make the situation worse.

When will the Prime Minister take control of the situation?

Public Safety February 21st, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his answer. I would like to take this opportunity to tell him that, yes, directives can be given, even though the government has been saying the opposite from the outset.

Are we to believe that the Prime Minister asked the RCMP at the meeting not to do anything?
