Statements in the House

Housing October 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, once again, today, the Conservative Party is giving us a clear example of how, for everything it wants to put in place, it is going to make a cut somewhere else. The Conservatives are going to make cuts to health and social programs, and today they are saying that they are going to scrap the housing accelerator.

How is this member from Quebec going to tell the Government of Quebec that he wants to eliminate 8,000 social and affordable housing units in Quebec? That is what he is telling Quebeckers today.

Health October 22nd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for her ongoing activism in the area of women's rights.

The coming into force of the Pharmacare Act is a historic moment. This legislation will allow people like my daughter and future generations to choose for themselves and to have access to contraception without having to worry about how to pay for it.

Unlike the Conservatives, who want to take away women's freedom of choice, our government will always support women's autonomy over their bodies, their lives and their future.

Housing October 22nd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I would like to remind my colleague that it was this government that implemented the first national housing strategy and built thousands of homes across the country. We also created a tax-free savings account. One of the young people who signed up was my brother, who is 33. Now, 700,000 people across the country have signed up, and they will have a chance to realize their dream of buying a home. They have this government to thank.

Mr. Speaker, like my colleague, I represent an area in Montreal's east end. We are seeing the human crisis playing out.

Unlike the Conservatives, who ignore human dignity in order to exploit human misery, on this side of the House, we are going to work with every municipality to make sure that everyone has a roof over their heads.

Regional Economic Development October 9th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague, who also happens to be a colleague from the east end of Montreal, as I am.

Last week, I announced a call for social innovation projects in Montreal's east end. This is the first time that a $1‑million investment will support new social innovation projects that will result in economic and environmental spin-offs for the revitalization of Montreal's east end. I invite all companies to submit projects by November 29.

We are here to ensure that Montreal's east end is part of the economy of the future.

Tourism Industry September 27th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, World Tourism Day is an opportunity to celebrate the pride we take in sharing our home with the world, as well as the industry's contribution to the economy.

Last week, at the G20 on Tourism, we talked in particular about the major challenges facing the tourism sector. What are they? Climate change, for one. Unlike the Conservatives, who do not believe in climate change—we are seeing proof positive of that right now—we believe not only in supporting tourism growth, but also in fighting climate change, because it is very real.

The Economy September 24th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, there is a great deal of hypocrisy in a question that is supposed to show concern for people's lives, when the leader of the Conservative Party cannot even clearly state his hidden agenda and when the member for Cypress Hills—Grasslands got a paid trip to Florida to flog an anti-abortion, anti-women's rights vision.

The first thing he should do is get his caucus under control and reassure women here in Canada that this right will not be touched.

The Economy September 17th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, everyone in the House can see how hypocritical the Conservatives are being when they say they are concerned about putting a roof over people's heads. The only thing they want to do is cut funding for housing construction and tear up the dozens of agreements that we signed with cities across the country.

On this side of the House, we will make sure to build the housing that people need.

Seniors June 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, community organizations have been working hard to present and develop projects under this national program. Seniors need these projects, which involve things like delivering meals and helping with transportation.

We are working on solutions with Quebec because we want to make sure that community organizations get the money they need to help seniors. There are not two classes of seniors; there is only one, and this government will be there to help them all.
