[Correctional Service of Canada, December 8th, 2014]

Mr. Speaker, we look forward to receiving the recommendations of the Correctional Service of Canada arising from the report on the tragic death of this young woman. We have already put several measures in place to address mental health issues in our prisons.

At the same time, we are ensuring that dangerous people remain behind bars. We believe that people with mental health problems should not be in prison. They should be in psychiatric hospitals. That is why we are working with the provincial authorities in this regard.

Mr. Speaker, terrorism is a real threat, and Canadians must remain vigilant.

That is why we joined a coalition to fight terrorism and drive out barbarism here and abroad. We remain firmly committed to ensuring that entire populations can live in safety.

We will also continue to implement measures here in Canada. We plan to introduce new legislation to keep Canadians safe.

Mr. Speaker, I invite the opposition member to get his act together and to support a bill that would require mandatory training for anyone who wants to own or acquire a weapon, that combats domestic violence and that strengthens the standards regarding the import of illegal weapons.

We will continue to implement effective measures and standards, and we will protect Canadians. I urge the opposition member to support us.

Mr. Speaker, I am disappointed to learn that NDP members did not support this common-sense legislation to empower our national security agencies, but I should not be surprised since they opposed the Combating Terrorism Act.

How could anyone be opposed to a measure that clarifies the powers of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and ensures that an accused has access to a fair and just process under all Canadian laws?

I thank my Conservatives colleagues who fortunately stand tall to keep our country safe.

Mr. Speaker, let me quote the Integrity Commissioner. He said that he was satisfied with the RCMP's response.

Of course, we thank the commissioner for his report. We expect the RCMP to continue to be professional both in serving the public and in its administrative management. I am convinced that it will continue working hard to protect the public.

Mr. Speaker, the member is right. As this relates to a matter before the court, it would be inappropriate to comment any further.

Let me quote what the Integrity Commissioner had to say about the RCMP: “I am satisfied with the RCMP's response on this matter.” So I am. While I expect the RCMP to conduct itself in the highest manner, we fully support it when it is protecting us, and we will continue to do so.

Mr. Speaker, the government is committed to standing up for law-abiding hunters, farmers, and sport shooters. The government was pleased to end the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry once and for all. It was pleased to stop the bureaucratic efforts of the Ontario Chief Firearms Officer to bring in a gun registry by the back door. It was pleased to cancel the proposed gun show regulations, and continuously defer the UN firearms marking regulations. More recently, the government was pleased to introduce Bill C-42, the common sense firearms licensing act. This bill would, among other common sense and red-tape reducing measures, limit the arbitrary authority of chief firearms officers. The government will not accept any attempts to bring back the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry.

Mr. Speaker, as I just said, our government takes the privacy of Canadians very seriously. That is why we expect law enforcement agencies to obey the laws that are in place.

At the same time, I would also like to say that we expect the opposition to support the measures we add to Canada's legislation to enhance the safety of Canadians.

Mr. Speaker, our government takes the privacy of law-abiding Canadians very seriously. In the meantime, we are always looking at ways in which we can make sure that our law enforcement agencies have the tools that they need to protect Canadians.

I hope that when we do so, we can count on the support of the opposition.

Mr. Speaker, let us be very clear. This bill keeps all the safety rules regarding the transportation of restricted firearms. However, that is not what the Liberals have said. Whether the Liberal leader has intentionally misled the House and Canadians or has not read the bill, he should apologize, tell the truth and say that this bill, while increasing public safety, is respecting law-abiding citizens.
