Statements in the House

Veterans Affairs November 20th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives are cutting services and closing regional offices, forcing our veterans to travel great distances, and now we have learned that the government helped itself to $1.1 billion destined for our veterans.

That is unconscionable. No wonder veterans no longer want to be seen with the minister.

Why is the government trying to save money at our veterans' expense?

Petitions November 20th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the second petition is about unreasonable ATM transaction fees.

This petition was also signed by many of my constituents who oppose these fees. They want the current government to introduce a bill to change this, as it is unfair to taxpayers.

Petitions November 20th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I am presenting two petitions. The first is about cuts to postal services.

This petition was signed by more than 700 people in my riding who are completely opposed to proposed federal government cuts and the elimination of home delivery. I fully support them in their efforts and I condemn what is happening with postal services.

Poverty November 19th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, 25 years ago, on the initiative of Ed Broadbent, the Canadian government promised to put an end to child poverty by 2000.

Twenty-five years have passed, and both Liberal and Conservative governments have failed to meet that goal. In Canada, one in five children is living in poverty. We need to take immediate action here at home.

Rather than implementing tax policies that will benefit only the wealthy, will the government finally take practical measures to eliminate child poverty?

Committees of the House November 17th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleague from Chambly—Borduas for his presentation and his comments about young people and their current situation. I want to congratulate him, because he is one of the young MPs who was elected in 2011. Today we are seeing the results of what these young people do in the House. Again, I thank them for all their work. They do a great job representing our youth.

I would like him to comment on what the situation is like for young people in his riding. I see it in my riding, Hull—Aylmer. Young students are discouraged by the job market and the chances of finding a job in their field. I would like the member to say more about this situation in his riding.

The Budget November 17th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, what we know is that the sick and the unemployed are paying the price for the Conservatives' bad budget choices.

Our veterans are receiving fewer and fewer services, Canadians' safety is at risk because of cuts to food inspection and transportation safety, and parents are still waiting for the day care spaces that the Conservatives promised them.

Does the minister understand that what he calls a budget surplus is really just another way of saying service cuts?

The Budget November 17th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the economic update that was presented last week to a bunch of Toronto bankers is a sham.

If the minister ends up balancing his budget, it will not be because he is a good manager. It will be because he filched money from the unemployed and cut provincial health transfers.

Will the Minister of Finance admit that his tax cuts for the wealthy are funded by money that was meant for the unemployed and the sick?

The Environment November 17th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, now that China and the United States have signed an agreement, the Conservative Party has become an even bigger climate change pariah.

Its number one excuse for failing to act just evaporated now that the two major emitters have committed to doing their part. The Liberals and the Conservatives have betrayed Canadians' interests by refusing to take action. This must stop.

When will the government come up with a real plan to tackle climate change?

Taxation November 7th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the Minister of Finance again plans to ignore Parliament and instead deliver the fall economic update at an exclusive $80 a plate event in Toronto, but his bad choices do not end there. We already know he wants to spend billions on an income-splitting scheme for the wealthy that will give no benefit whatsoever to more than 85% of Canadians. Does he honestly believe that ordinary working families would be impressed with his Bay Street budget?

Taxation November 7th, 2014

Mr. Speaker, the truth is that there are 200,000 more unemployed people than there were at the beginning of the recession. The truth is that the Conservatives have nothing to offer families and workers in the manufacturing sector. I, for one, am not surprised that the Minister of Finance is seeking refuge among Toronto bankers.

Why is the government not using next week's economic update to help families and workers?
